CyberSecure™ Microsoft Exchange® Mail-Level Backup Guide

Please follow the instructions below to backup individual Microsoft Exchange Server 2000 / 2003 emails, tasks, journal and calendar entries using the CyberSecure Advanced client software.

Prerequisites

  1. You MUST use the ADVANCED edition of CyberSecure Backup in order to backup Microsoft Exchange databases at the mail-level.

Setting up the Exchange 2007 mail-level offsite backup

  1. Download and install the Microsoft Exchange Server MAPI Client and Collaboration Data Objects ExchangeMAPICdo.exe

    Since Microsoft Exchange Messaging Application Program Interface (MAPI) is only available in 32bit, and that it is not possible to run both 32bit and 64bit modules within a single process. Thus, 32-bit Java Runtime Environment is required perform mail-level backup. The 32-bit Java Runtime Environment is already bundled with CyberSecure Advanced version 5.5.5.0 or above.

  2. Expand the zip file into ${Install-Home}

  3. Navigate to the unzipped folder and Install MAPI by clicking on the installer file ExchangeMapiCdo.msi.

  4. Follow the On-Screen Prompts and Finish installation

  5. Start the CyberSecure Advanced application in 32bit mode: Run ${Install-Home}\bin\RunOBC32.bat

  6. Once you are into the software in. Click on the Cog icon to open Backup Settings.

  7. Create a new exchange MAIL-LEVEL backup set by clicking on the Add (+) button.

  8. Choose an appropriate label identifier for the backup set:

  9. Follow the instructions of the backup set wizard to complete the configuration of the new mail level backup set
  10. Perform the mail-level backup immediately by selecting [Backup], or let the backup job to be performed at its scheduled time.

NOTE :

It is important that CyberSecure software has permissions to connect to the MS Exchange database via MAPI.

Please ensure that the "Log on" account of the CyberSecure scheduler service has sufficient permission right to access the MS Exchange database.

Instead of "Local System" (which is used by default), run the CyberSecure scheduler service with a Windows account that has sufficient permission right to access the MS Exchange database. You can do so by following the instructions below:

  1. Open [Control Panel] -> [Administrative Tools] -> [Services] -> [Online Backup Scheduler (CyberSecure Online Backup Manager)] -> [Log on]

  2. Select the [This Account] option

  3. Enter the Login Credentials
  4. Restart the [Online Backup Scheduler (CyberSecure Online Backup Manager)] service

Furthermore, please ensure that the Windows account used is mailbox-enabled.

Setting up the Exchange (2000 / 2003) mail-level offsite backup

  1. Once you are into the software. Click on the Cog icon to open Backup Settings.

  2. Create a new exchange MAIL-LEVEL backup set by clicking on the Add (+) button.

  3. Choose an appropriate label identifier for the backup set:

  4. Choose your Exchange database folders to backup.

  5. The next screen allows you to set a schedule for automatic exchange backup.

  6. (Optional) If required, you can adjust the encryption settings to specify a different password, or change the encryption cipher operation mode.

    If you are unsure exactly what these settings do, please leave them at the defaults.

  7. Your Microsoft Exchange mail-level backup set creation is complete!

    You are now ready to perform the first full backup, either via seeding the data onto removable media, or online to CyberSecure's storage servers.
